Demarcation Diaries
1 October 2001
Moonlight from the full moon over camp 4... tonight the jungle is
alive, far noisier than I have heard it before. Crickets, a very
enthusiastic toad, birds, the thunderous crash of falling trees and
other less easily identifiable sounds. Could one of them be a jaguar?
We have a bird-eating spider in our camp again. It's in the kitchen,
it's hairy legs gripping the table as it creeps away from our curious
torches. I feel surprisingly affectionate towards it. Maybe it is the
same spider hitching a lift from the last camp. It bites, but only
when provoked, and it isn't venomous.
I want to sit out all night under the new moon listening to the jungle
but i know this is a bad idea. I'm already tired and tomorrow will be
another busy day.
