Demarcation Diaries
5 Sepetmber 2001
We are almost at our final destination. After 10 days inside
this ship, it should be tedious, but this is not the case. Everyday
there are different conversations, reasons to laugh, and always
with the enormous beauty of the forest.
We are learning how to operate radios and satellite telephones,
essential for the work inside the jungle.
But the words that make me the most happy when spoken by this
nice guy from New Zealand are: Marcio, there are emails for you!
So good to read words from loved ones in Rio!
Surprises happen everyday, helping to break the routine. Yesterday
the propeller of the boat broke after hitting the bottom of the
river. So we stopped at a beach to change it, which gave us the
chance to take a bath at the waters of the Jurua. Of course, there
was lots of childish playing, one pushing the other into the water,
etc. Great fun, and the problem was resolved.
And at night another surprise: it was captain Flavio's birthday!
There was a barbecue at one beautiful beach (you can imagine
the amount of mosquitoes!). The best thing was the opportunity
to walk and watch the beautiful sky, finally listening to
the sounds of the jungle without the noise of the boat's engine.

But someone thought that Jan and I had been eaten by an onca
(don't know the name in English - it's our biggest cat), so Manuel
came to get us with the small boat, the voadeira.
