Demarcation Diaries
9 September 2001
Janine: Yesterday morning I finally joined the boat and met my comrades who I will be with
for the next six weeks. more
Steve: When I rode the current and swam
along the starboard side of the ship, the Deni on the lower deck pointed
at me, yelled a lot (I could only make out the word Jacare) and laughed so
hard they almost tipped over. I think that they simply didn't understand
what we were doing. more
Paula, Samuel and Petros (Cuniua Team) : Today we team helped the Deni put up the first sign at
our starting point on the Cuniua river (position MC-01). We also
cleared the brush from around the area to make the sign easier
to see from both sides of the river. Very nice. more
Note: Volunteers and the Deni work in three different teams. Team C (Cuniuã Team) works by boat following the Coxodoã, Cuniuã and Canaçã rivers, the natural boundary of the Deni territory along the eastern perimeter. Teams A and B started at the north west tip, working away from each other, assisting the Deni in cutting a 1.5 meter path through the jungle and erecting signs identifying the Deni territory.
