Demarcation Diaries

9 September 2001

Yesterday morning I finally joined the boat and met my comrades who I will be with for the next six weeks.

While the rest of the teams were travelling by boat, I got an entirely different first view of the Amazon from the air. It was mind-blowing to fly over all those different shades of green with the weather shifting so rapidly. Storms gather here in seconds, the humidity clears for a brief relief and returns every bit as quickly.

Within a couple of hours I had been bitten and was able to join in the general complaining and comparing of our "war-wounds". I will be working on the demarcation as a doctor. There are certainly plenty of us around, I make number four. This afternoon some sick Deni came to the boat and got seen instantly by three of us. I wish this could happen in the NHS in England!

Its going to be good to work with such an experienced and well equipped team. We start on the demarcation tomorrow. The roles of the Greenpeace people will be to support our Deni friends as they demarcate their own land. The general feeling on board is excitement and eagerness to start work. I think we will learn a huge amount working with the Deni. I hope we will be of some use to them. Next update from the jungle!
