Demarcation Diaries
11 September 2001
We´re already at our destination, the mouth of Xeruá
river. Like the others, the water levels are very low. This is
where we started the work with the Deni, and here the Com. Sávio
will also stay here until the end.
On the calm waters of the Juruá pink botos come in a lazy
way to the surface. The ship is on a beach, and on the other side
of the river there are houses of Ribeirinhos, the local people.
The forest appears some meters ahead. Beautiful, like everything
around here.
On the beach a small shelter, like the one we will use inside
the jungle, has been built. According to the ones who built it,
Amazon people are use to it and many people can sleep inside on
hammocks. Difficult to believe, but ok!
There is also are our soccer "stadium", where Brazil
won the game versus the rest of the
world (4-2). And I got two goals! Difficult to believe, but ok!
The teams are now complete. Paula, Petros and Samuel left us
and went to Cuniuá river. Nilo, Janine, the people from
CIMI and technicians have arrived, as well as the Deni, the most
important ones. So the ship is really full of people, there are
hammocks everywhere at night.
The number of mosquitoes is also getting higher, and it is difficult
to wear long clothing because of the heat.
The demarcation work was started and today is the second day.
Heavy work, opening trails through the jungle which will correspond
to the boundaries of the Deni land. The conditions are not optimal,
but everyone is motivated and believes in what they are doing.
Essential for success of any work.
