Demarcation Diaries
12 September 2001
Yesterday, when my group returned from the forest, we received
the news about the terrorist acts that in New York City and Washington
DC. Very shocking to say the least.
There is a satellite dish on board, so we were able to see the
Brazilian version of the news. Beyond the shocking reality of
what we were watching, I saw a very international group, sitting
together, taking in all the facts.
The Deni do not have television, do not know big cities, do not
know distances beyond their territory.
I sat next to my partners here from all these different countries,
and we all just kept looking at each other. Right now, I find
it impossible to imagine the activity in the US. After writing
about snakes, spiders, alligators, we all have said we feel safe
here now.
We sat most of the day around a short-wave radio, listening to
the BBC from London, each of us taking turns trying to tune it
in to a channel that was saying something more, some more details.
The visuals on the television kept shocking and reshocking us.
I wanted to call home, I have friends there in New York, but all
I can do is wait and hope.
The incredible part, from my perspective here, was all the varying
perspectives we have of why, how. There were a lot of caring,
considerate comments. I hope to send off a letter to home now
just to connect with my family and friends.
Today, we will receive six more people on board. Our campaigners,
Manuel and Nilo will return, as well as two more volunteers, a
German journalist, and one of the Deni leaders.
The process of marking this land is a giant step for them, it
is in their eyes and the energy is in the air.
Despite the current news, we are helping to shape the future
of this part of the Amazon, and the work has to continue. I think
we all feel, just like the US said, we will continue our work
because it is good work, we are doing good things, making bonds
that no one can be allowed to break.
From the leading edge of the Deni Territory,
