Demarcation Diaries
12 September 2001
Kontau (Team A) : We received an e-mail
from Paulo Adario, Greenpeace campaigner in Manaus, in which he
expressed a feeling which was felt by the volunteers on the ship
as well. "The terrorist attacks in Washington DC and New
York not only killed an unidentified number of innocents and put
the whole world in the corner, they also helped to silence the
voices of Haku Varashadeni and his people. Distant of the global
political nightmare, they don't even know what is happening."

Bryan (Team A) : Despite the current news,
we are helping to shape the future of this part of the Amazon,
and the work has to continue. I think we all feel, just like the
US said, we will continue our work because it is good work, we
are doing good things, making bonds that no one can be allowed
to break. more
Steve (Team B) : After the initial shock
where the mind struggles to comprehend the reality of this horrible
event, I have examined and processed my feelings to a point where
I feel somewhat clear again. With this regained clarity, I feel
certain that our work here, including the writing our updates,
must continue as usual. Not in spite of this tragedy, but because
of it. more
Paula, Samuel and Petros (Cuniua Team) : Diogo
has been bitten by a piranha and lost part of his finger (a small
one). I sutured the rest of it and it looks almost ok. We need
to resupply the surgical kit now because is not sterile anymore.

Note: Volunteers and the Deni work in three different teams. Team C (Cuniuã Team) works by boat following the Coxodoã, Cuniuã and Canaçã rivers, the natural boundary of the Deni territory along the eastern perimeter. Teams A and B started at the north west tip, working away from each other, assisting the Deni in cutting a 1.5 meter path through the jungle and erecting signs identifying the Deni territory.
