Demarcation Diaries
14 September 2001
We have a new location for the Zumbi, we are close to the mouth
the Coxodoa stream and it will be our base from now on. The tributaries
here are so narrow this time of year we can only travel by boadeira.
Tomorrow we will clean a beach nearby to be ready for that promised
helicopter.
Medical Report:
Cutuvi is sick. It is probably our cooking. The Deni are not
used to eating as often as us and also not such oily food (and
the cooking capacities of some of the team members are very questionable).
Ademar got a "ura" ( tecnical name: cordilobia antropofaga),
that is a fly that puts its eggs inside your skin and then the
larva grows there ( making a big mess) until a fly comes out (isn't
it disgusting?). We tried to remove it with all the traditional
procedures: putting tobacco inside the hole, throwing smoke (all
the team has been smoking around Ademar and his wound the whole
afternoon), putting a piece of fat to try to asphyxiate the worm
and putting on vaseline. But no success. It is probably too small
to be removed so we decided (after a meeting) to wait and let
it grow up a little bit.
Diogo's finger is better although is not growing any more.
Carlos is still with fever.
Petros' and Samuel's swelling is going down.
The situation is not as bad as it sounds although the piums are
of course still eating us slowly.
The Zumbi smells fresh coffee now. Another day is the jungle.
