Demarcation Diaries
16 September 2001
Janine (Team A) : We have tried to explain
to our Deni friends what has happened but even after watching
the news I do not know if they really get it. It is worlds away
from the way they live. How can we expect a culture with a system
of trade, common ownership and small decentralized 'government'
to understand the concepts of the World Bank and a super power more
Kontau (Team A) : Today is Sunday and luckily our team had a day off. Because there is no work and no school to
remind us, we often forget the dates in the Amazon. more
Paula, Samuel and Petros (Cuniua Team) : Tomorrow we will
go to meet more Deni in Cidade Zina, so we are now preparing food
to bring with us and give to his wife so she will let us keep
her husband for a while (this is the way things work around here).

Note: Volunteers and the Deni work in three different teams. Team C (Cuniuã Team) works by boat following the Coxodoã, Cuniuã and Canaçã rivers, the natural boundary of the Deni territory along the eastern perimeter. Teams A and B started at the north west tip, working away from each other, assisting the Deni in cutting a 1.5 meter path through the jungle and erecting signs identifying the Deni territory.
