Demarcation Diaries
20 September 2001
I got up at 5:00 a.m. to enjoy a last shower. Our team is going to set
up a camp in the forest, finally! I'm so excited that I hardly slept
last night. Especially now that Bryan has asked me if I would like to take
over his position as team leader, as I speak better Portuguese. We leave
with three completely packed boats and 17 people, headed to point 26, around 30km
away. We stop on the way to give a Deni family a lift to the next village.
The little kids look at us with big eyes and won't let go of their mother
for one second.
After three hours we are as close as we can get by boat.
We leave one on the shore and Sebastiao takes the other two back, one
piled on the other. With a car battery in my backpack for the laptop, for
the updates. We start our hike towards P26, at which the demarcation
will start for our team. It starts raining very hard and when we find an
abandoned shelter next to a stream, we decide to stay there for the night.
Within an hour all our hammocks are lined up under the tarps and we are
enjoying a warm meal around the campfire.
More tomorrow,
Merel
