Demarcation Diaries
27 September 2001
Janine (Team A) : Only a month ago I would not have spoken so lightly of
killing the snake but that's the reality of how we have to live out here.
At home I am vegetarian, I try to move spiders safely from the bath to
outside and don't step on bugs. Here I lie in my hammock each night
squashing all the little critters sharing it with me because I know
otherwise I'll be bitten. more
Ian (Team B) : Today was a good day. We moved to a new camp with the
helicopter (Tweety, a Bell 500) carrying all the heavy gear instead of
us.

Note: Volunteers and the Deni work in three different teams. Team C (Cuniuã Team) works by boat following the Coxodoã, Cuniuã and Canaçã rivers, the natural boundary of the Deni territory along the eastern perimeter. Teams A and B started at the north west tip, working away from each other, assisting the Deni in cutting a 1.5 meter path through the jungle and erecting signs identifying the Deni territory.
