Demarcation Diaries
29 September 2001
This morning I washed by the stream next to a thumb sized
humming bird. Yellow-tailed, green and blue bodied, wings beating
furiously, it hovered watching me watching it.
The spectrum of colour in the Amazon is amazing. Butterflies of all
shapes, sizes from 4 inch bright green to tiny, tiny purple ones.
Lizards in every shade from gold to blue. Dragonflies, gauzy
transparent blue with yellow globes an each wing. The drabbest
animals here are us with our white faces and faded muddy
clothes.
Today Martin, the last volunteer to join our group, arrived. It was so
good to have a long English conversation with someone. I'm finding
it frustrating being the only person in camp who doesn't speak
Portuguese. Merel translates as much as she can but I still miss
a lot and I'm really sorry I can't communicate better with the Deni.
That will be my greatest loss. Still, I'm learning how to
communicate with smiles and body language and my Portuguese
is improving daily.
