Demarcation Diaries

30 September 2001

Deni discussing FUNAI letter.FUNAI, the Government body responsible for demarcation, has contacted Greenpeace and demanded that we stop the demarcation of Deni lands immediately. They seem oblivious to the irony in this. FUNAI has repeatedly failed to carry out the demarcation despite government pledges that it will be done. Greenpeace are not carrying out any demarcation work at all. We are only supporting the Deni while they carry out the job. Everybody at camp is very angry.

Nilo, the Greenpeace forests campaigner, comes to speak to the Deni and we write down their words in a letter to FUNAI explaining our position.

The finished letter gives very clear demands.

The Deni will stop demarcating only when FUNAI give them a date of when the demarcation will be done.

The demarcation work which has already been completed must be recognized by FUNAI.

Now we can do noting but wait and carry on our support of the Deni's work, in hope that it will not all be in vain.
