Amazon Updates
23 September 2001
This is my first experience on board a Greenpeace ship and I
have been on the MV Arctic Sunrise since September 9th. Actually,
it almost feels like I live here, a lot of work as a deckhand,
new friends from everywhere in the world, fun with the crew and
wonderful views travelling on the Amazon rivers.
I am learning safety procedures on board and we have already
had one boat driving training, that was really nice.
 |
To be part of the crew is not just a party, we have to
live with discipline and responsibility. I have many friends
that would like to be in my place, so I feel like I am doing
this for all of them and I don't really deserve to be here!
The Amazon campaign "Viva Amazonia", is for me
very special, as a Brazilian, a geography student and a
nature lover, just to be here and have the possibility to
help the people here is a very important opportunity and
I want to do my best.
|
We are thinking a lot about this "new war", all the
crazy things that can still happen and what Greenpeace must do.
In my opinion, just the fact that Greenpeace, an international
organisation fighting for a better world, is working in the remote
areas of the Amazon shows the world that we can respect the differences
and that these people are not alone, they are very important to
our planet.
I think that we cannot watch this Amazonian environment being
exploited in an irrational way. I believe it is one of the last
paradises on earth and a place of many natural resources that
have to be studied and used very carefully in order to preserve
that and allow the people to live here in dignity.
