Saudi Arabia occupies Oman and the Yemen
The Saudi Arabian chief of staff announced that his troops had occupied the whole of Oman and the Yemen following weeks of fighting. The attack had been "necessary", said Emir Seif al-Harb, because for months the Governments in Muscat and Sanaa had flouted their OPEC quotas and exported too much oil. The war has already claimed thousands of victims.
In Washington Ex-President Gore presented his memoirs, Earth on a Tightrope. In it he writes that the biggest mistake in his career was to have underestimated the importance of the 1995 Climate Conference in Berlin, and to have done too little to prevent its failure.
Flood of the century in Bangladesh
The situation in Bangladesh has become more critical still following the flood disaster in which 400,000 people died last week. The seventh "flood of the century" since the year 2000 has left fifteen per cent of the country under water and made 70 million people homeless. Supplies of food and water have not yet been got through to those affected.
Mercedes-Benz steps on the gas
Mercedes Benz has presented its new model in Stuttgart. The 45 h.p. car has a top speed of 200 mph, at which speed it does ten miles to the gallon. A company spokesperson at the same time announced that the first fuel-efficient car to do 75 miles to the gallon was expected to go into mass production in 2022.
The whole of Europe will remain under the influence of a stable area of
high pressure. The dry sunny weather which has been here since the
beginning of February will continue. Maximum daytime temperatures will
be between 30 and 35 degrees Celsius, falling to 20 degrees at night.
The fire risk is extremely high on account of the long period of
dryness. Stricter water rationing also has to be expected.
