The Nintendo Foundation has this year conferred its Mobile City award on Mexico City. The jury paid tribute to the city's success in implementing the concept of a "car-free" city. Forty per cent of the journeys made by the city's inhabitants are by bicycle, and thirty per cent by bus and train. Less than ten per cent are made by fuel-efficient car.

Award for climate protector

Ex-President Al Gore has received the highest UN award. His efforts to protect the climate have been acknowledged with the Greencross and Goldstar. It was thanks to him, it was said in the commendation, that a protocol for the reduction of carbon dioxide was signed at the Berlin Climate Summit in 1995.

Sellafield Nuclear Museum 20 years old

The Nuclear Museum in Sellafield will be celebrating twenty years of existence this weekend. On Saturday a symposium of top experts will discuss the future of energy in Europe. In an inaugural address Heinz Laing, the former Greenpeace nuclear expert, will describe the history of the phaseout of nuclear energy and the creation of the ideas which made it possible.

Sales Booth China evades trade barriers

The world trade organisation has threatened China with sanctions on account of its aggressive export policy. Chinese companies have for months been inundating western markets with cheap photovoltaic modules. The prices of solar energy panels had already been steadily crumbling in the past few years as mass production had been stepped up.

Weather

A trough of low pressure is approaching from the west and will cross central Europe in the next two days, bringing mild springlike air. Daytime temperatures will be around 15 degrees, with night-time temperatures between five and eight degrees. Some short showers may be expected during the day; otherwise it will be cloudy with short sunny periods. Winds will be south-westerly and moderate.
