I first became involved with Greenpeace in 1990. I saw the Rainbow Warrior in Sydney and thought it would be great to sail away on her. I had an interview with the captain who liked my qualifications and the next thing I knew I was sailing out of Sydney harbour as a volunteer.

That trip I was on board for nine months, I did not want to get off. We sailed around the south and north Pacific campaigning for environmental issues. We protested against French Nuclear Testing at Mururoa, driftnet fishing n the North Pacific, toxic incineration on Johnston Atoll, gold mining off the Oregon coast, and many other environmental problems.

Greenpeace opened my eyes, I did not realise so much destruction was happening to our planet until I started working in the organisation. I feel there is a great need for more people to become aware of the environmental problems, because we will do nothing unless we know we can do something; and we definitely need to make this planet a healthier place to live.
