Maarten Jansens: 2nd Engineer

I am a professional Marine Engineer with 7 years experience of working on commercial ships. I joined Greenpeace in the early eighties as a volunteer, during my time at the nautical college, helping out with maintenance on the Greenpeace ships based in Amsterdam. In those days I was involved in an action in Rotterdam port against shipment of titandioxide which was to be dumped. Got my first contract as a crew member/engineer on the "Beluga" in '93. Since then almost constantly employed by Greenpeace Marine Services, sailed on the "Moby Dick", the "Rainbow Warrior", the "Solo", the "Sirius", worked on the "Greenpeace", and am now aboard the "Arctic Sunrise". I have been involved in the Mediterranean campaign, the Chlorine campaign, the Brent Spar campaign, the Nuke campaign (both Plutonium Transport and Reprocessing at Cherbourg, and the Forest campaign in British Columbia. My involvement in Greenpeace was, from the early years, a quite direct choice to do something useful for society through practically helping Greenpeace, rather than just producing and consuming. I therefore quit high school and went to nautical college to learn a skill so that I could help Greenpeace. After all these years of being involved, I have no doubts that I did the right thing.
