Greenpeace activists end blockade of the Exxon oil tanker in Italy due to bad weather

Vado Ligure, Savona, Italy: More than 24 hours after starting a protest activity against the oil tanker Clare Spirit, Greenpeace activists have ended their protest to prevent the 80,000 tonne oil carrier, chartered by US oil company ExxonMobil, from discharging its cargo of gas and petrol. Bad weather and safety considerations moved the environmental group to end the action.

The Clare Spirit is currently anchored about 500 meters from the coast, but has, up to now, be prevented from reaching the discharge installation by the Greenpeace activists.

“We are sending a clear message to the G-8 that there is no room for oil industry and George Bush to continue business as usual when their business is to destroy the world’s climate,” said Paul Horsman, Greenpeace Climate campaigner. “The world’s leaders should commit to the Kyoto Protocol with or without George Bush and his oil industry backers,” he concluded.
