Shale Oil - The world's most
polluting Climate Change fuel
At
the Stuart Oil Shale Project near the Great Barrier Reef, Australia, Southern
Pacific Petroleum and Central Pacific Minerals (SPP/CPM) are experimenting
with extracting oil from shale rock. Shale oil is the most greenhouse
polluting fossil fuel of all four
times more damaging to the climate than conventional oil .
Greenpeace has campaigned
against
the development of shale oil since 1998. In April 2001, Canadian oil
company, Suncor, pulled out of its involvement with the Stuart
project. The company's withdrawal was a blow to the industry and a
major win for Greenpeace.
Unfortunately, SPP/CPM are still trying to develop the Stuart Project,
even though it's over budget, behind schedule, facing legal action by
local residents and of, course, it has significant negative environmental
impacts.
