Last year, four million people were affected by famine in northern Ethiopia; rains have thus far failed to arrive this year. In contrast, storms and floods have left 350,000 people homeless near the Sudanese border. This is the third consecutive year of drought.
In Sudan, drought has driven 10,000 people from their homes and forced the price of food to soar. In Khatoum, the price of sorghum has quadrupled and in the south, food prices have increased by as much as 14 times. The UN estimates that the prolonged drought in Angola threatens 250,000 people with immediate starvation.
