When governmental negotiators assemble in Berlin for the Climate Summit on March 28th they will be joined for the first time in four years of talks by lobbyists from the financial sector. Hitherto the business lobbyists have only been from the oil, coal, auto and chemical industries: the carbon club as they are known.
Among the financial institutions represented for the first time will be Swiss Re, the world's second biggest reinsurer. Last year, one of Swiss Re's reports concluded that human intervention in the natural climatic system could accelerate global climatic change to such an extent that society may no longer be able to adapt quickly enough. Swiss Re board member Rudolf Kellenberg said in October 1994 that we are not getting a climatic problem in future. We have it now... we need to act now, not later. There is no shortage of practical suggestions, especially with regard to a drastic reduction of greenhouse gases.
This pack highlights one of the most important solutions - power
from the sun. It
seems that the solar energy revolution, which many expected after the
second
oil-price shock, could now belatedly be set to take the stage.
