Arctic Diary

Ingrid and the rest of the Egg Island crew

Excitement on Egg island abounds as we eagerly await the arrival of the MV Arctic Sunrise. Official interest in our little camp has increased since the Arctic Sunrise arrived in Pt. Barrow, Alaska. This is the day all Egg Islanders have anticipated.

The last time we saw the Arctic Sunrise was in Homer, Alaska about a month ago when we dropped our resupply food onboard. We said our farewells, and a lot sure has happened since then. We got word today that the ship is ice breaking and slowly picking it's way east towards us from Barrow. The energy is high as we dream of simple things like a hot shower, warm bed, and food with no sand in it.

The ship rang at about 1am Alaska time to say that they were about to drop anchor and we would see them in the morning. The happy Egg Island campers awoke to the best Arctic Sunrise yet. There she was about three miles off in all her glory. A beautiful, sunny (yet still cold) arctic morning. In classic Greenpeace fashion, we had to hurry up and wait for an inflatable to come pick us up. We patiently waited, holding out our hunger until we could get onboard for bacon and eggs.

So we have just arrived onboard are certainly happy to be here. Looming about a mile away from us is the Arco CIDS. We are happy to be with our friends, but we know that we have some hard work ahead of us.......
