"Enemies of the Province"

Release of the Greenpeace report "Broken Promises: the Truth About What's Happening to B.C.'s Forests" created a furor among industry and government circles in B.C. this week. Premier Glen Clark labelled Greenpeace "enemies" of the province and "extremists" during a TV interview and promised to launch a "counteroffensive". The report, based principally on Government and industry documents, details the complete failure by successive governments to enforce the Code, reduce the cutting of public forests to sustainable levels o adequately protect forest regions of global ecological importance. It also shows that the provincial and federal governments, along with the forest industry, have spent over $65 million in public relations to try to convince the world that all is well in the woods.

The report was produced in conjunction with the Sierra Legal Defense Fund.

Clearcut Dismay -- Goodall

Jane Goodall, the world famous primate scientist who has gone on record as being against civil disobedience while supporting forest protection, came out in support of Greenpeace's efforts in B.C. this week. "I'm with Greenpeace on this one," said Goodall in a live radio interview. She went on to explain her distress at witnessing the destruction of the forests in B.C. by clearcut logging and the need to stop such destruction worlwide.
