EUROPE SAYS "NO!" TO GENETICALLY ENGINEERED FOOD
GENETIC ENGINEERING: A COSTLY RISK:
The Potential Consequences are Frightening
Genetic scientists are altering life itself - dabbling with genes to produce unnatural living plants, and animals. But when the scientists job is done and industry pushes these strange life forms into every area of our lives no-one will be able to control them and no-one can even begin to predict the impact they will have on all our lives.
GENETIC ENGINEERING IS NOT BIOTECHNOLOGY:
But genetic scientists are now trying to hijack the word
Greenpeace is NOT opposed to biotechnology. Biotechnology leaves the natural balance of genes, species and ecosystems in tact. Greenpeace IS opposed to genetic engineering. Genetic Engineering will upset this balance irreversibly and threatens the very diversity of life on our planet.
THE END OF THE WORLD AS WE KNOW IT:
The Environmental Costs of Genetic Engineering
No one - including the genetic scientists - knows for sure the affect releasing new life forms will have on the environment. They do know that all of the above are possible and irreversible, but they still want to carry out their experiment. THEY get giant profits. All WE get is a new and uncertain environment - an end to the world as we know it.
THE GENETICALLY ENGINEERED SOYA BEAN:
Not Real Food
Monsanto's Soya Bean is the first crop ever to be sold as a food ingredient which has been manipulated genetically. Genes from bacteria, a virus, and a petunia..... We have never before eaten these "ingredients" in the human diet. Yet the makers assure us it is safe. How do they know?
GENETICALLY ENGINEERED CORN:
No Real Benefits
Unaffected by weed killer, resistant to a major antibiotic and capable of killing insects - a new corn genetically engineered by Ciba Geigy takes each of these supposed attributes from foreign bacteria genes. Ciba Geigy's corn is resistant to the herbicide, Basta, and Monsanto's soya is immune to their own product, glyphosate. But does anyone else benefit?
GENETIC ENGINEERING IS CONTAMINATING OUR FOOD:
Food Producers Can Stop It
Unilever, Danone and Nestle are Europe's leading food producers, and the biggest European buyers of soya beans for food from the US. They buy the oil and other derivatives from the soya to use in over 60% of our processed foods. By refusing genetically engineered products and sourcing their raw materials from non-genetically engineered crops, these companies have the power to prevent genetically engineered soya, corn or other products from getting into our foods.
FROM SCIENCE LABORATORY TO SUPERMARKET SHELF:
How we Get Genetically Engineered Food
Action by Governments.
When Monsanto and Ciba Geigy tried to foist their genetically engineered products on Europe, they had no idea public opposition would be so strong. All over Europe people are saying "No!' to products whose genes have been tampered with. As more and more consumers reject them, so some retailers, food producers and Governments are taking steps to hold back the unnatural foodstuffs. The message from Europe is clear - no-one wants genetically engineered food.
Action by Food Producers, Retailers and Consumers.
CALLING ALL FOOD PRODUCERS & FOOD RETAILERS!
Greenpeace sends its congratulations to the following responsible food producers and food retailers who are commited to providing the public with foods which are free of genetically engineered(GE)soya.
If your company can make the same commitment let us know NOW.

We will gladly add your name to the list of those deserving congratulations.
