Diary May 12th 1995 -

Good day to you, readers of this internet page, greetings from the Greenpeace activists on the Brent Spar. Today it is my turn to write a little note. It is now day 13 and things are getting better all the time. We have almost started to like living on the damned thing. It is getting homelier and cleaner every day and what's even more important, it is also becoming as safe as we can make it. We have got almost the same gear as you would find on a normal ship. Most of it we brought on ourselves but we are only using what we can, of course. We have got, to mention but a few: life rafts, flares, survival suits, lots of life vests, fire extinguishers, escape ladders and ropes, breathing apparatus, lots of medical equipment...and much more else.

Shell wrote us a letter saying that they were worried about our safety. Very nice of them but not necessary - they would be better off being concerned about the North Sea! Today I have been sampling a few of the big tanks. Take it from me, that stuff does not belong at the bottom of the sea, not even if it is 2000 metres deep. Everybody seems to understand that, except the big shots of Shell and their very well paid scientists. But eventually they will, it just takes time - of which we have as much as it will take. As I already said, The Spar is getting cosier, cleaner and sort of safer for the activists, and even the sun is doing it's best to make life a bit more comfortable. It is important that Shell agrees to dispose the Brent Spar in the proper way before we leave our temporary gently swinging 'home'.
