My name is Marc. My job while we're in the Antarctic is crew safety on shore. I also do the carpentry and help out as a deckhand on board the ship. The crew for the most part behave responsibly, but should there be a mishap, weather goes bad, someone has an accident, whatever, then there is a team standing-by to organize a rescue and get everyone safely back to the ship. This is my 7th trip to the ice on a Greenpeace ship. During that time there has never been (knock on wood) any serious mishaps. In 1990 I overwintered at World Park Base. That experience left me with a deep respect for this landscape of wind thrashed rock ice and snow.
Andy and I got to practice a little mountaineering safety, walking roped up around the cracks in the Larsen ice shelf. Even though I detest helicopters it was great flying around the ice shelf, and the nunataks, (rocky outcrops that rise out of the shelf). Everything went smoothly, which makes me happy but doesn't make for very interesting reading. Warm regards from a cold place.
