Ken Saro-Wiwi

You don't need to be an expert in African politics, economics or history to understand what has happened to Nigerian poet Ken Saro-Wiwa.

The essential truth is that a man has been hanged for peacefully protesting the destruction of his land and his people by multinational oil interests.

Ken Saro-Wiwa's sentence has been imposed by a military dictatorship acting in collusion with Multinational Oil Companies. Loved in Nigeria as a poet and playwright, his charismatic, non-violent leadership of the Ogoni has captured headlines around the world.

The Ogoni are one of at least eight minority ethnic groups in the Niger Delta whose land sits over petrolem reserves coveted by Shell Oil. Pursuit of these reserves has destroyed the Delta's ecosystem polluting land and water in this area which was once known as "the food basket of Nigeria". Hundreds of Ogoni lives have been lost and villages destroyed.

In May 1994, Nigeria's dictators, led by General Sani Abacha, framed Ken Saro-Wiwa for murder to silence his protests.

They obviously felt death was the only way they could guarantee his silence.

The Ogoni people have lost their spokesman and are now in more danger than ever.

It's right to feel rage, but don't mourn Ken Saro-Wiwa.

Instead celebrate him in his own words Dance your anger and your joys.

You can apply your own pressure on Shell, other multinational oil companies and the Nigerian Government Use the following addresses and numbers to write, fax or call now.
