DIARY UPDATE FROM THE CREW OF THE RAINBOW WARRIOR:

Thursday 22nd JUNE 07:58:59 GMT Part I.

As the ocean outside the harbour of Roratanga is to the leeward (sheltered) side of the island, we make use of the calm waters for a few hours of more boat training. It certainly makes a change from the steep swells we battled further south, and allows for practice of a different set of manouevres. Also some good "man overboard" training, where we practise gettting bodies out of the water.

Some crew remained behind on board where, throughout the course of the day, several hundred school children of a wide variety of ages toured the Rainbow Warrior. It is always a great boost to the crew to be infected by the enthusiasm of the kids. Their clear sense of (in)justice on this issue uncomplicated by politics or economics: why should anyone want to build bombs that can kill millions of people all at once, and test it in somebody else's backyard? Why indeed.

More as we continue our journey -- Alice.
