FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

GREENPEACE REAFFIRMS ITS POSITION ON FRENCH GOODS BOYCOTT

The Chairman of Greenpeace-France, Remi Parmentier, and the Executive Director of Greenpeace International, Thilo Bode, have reaffirmed their opposition to the boycott of French goods in connection zith the resumption of French nuclear testing in the South Pacific decided by President Chirac. This resumption has taken place against the will of the majority of French citizens and international public opinion, as well as against the nuclear weapons states' own commitment made within the framework of the Nuclear Proliferation Treaty.

Since the announcement of the resumption of nuclear testing in the month of June, Greenpeace has always refused to call for a boycott of French goods. We reiterate clearly for the future our decision not to use this protest method against nuclear testing.

Greenpeace thanks the French companies which have joined and continue to join Greenpeace's campaign and have expressed their opposition to the resumption of nuclear testing. We are of course committed to giving their names to the public only with their prior and formal consent.

We hope that this French nuclear test series, the last one, will mark the kiss of death of an image of France which is doing a lot of damage to French exporters. The numerous messages received by Greenpeace from French exporters opposed to nuclear testing is indicative of the emergence of the profile of "exporters of a new kind".
