My name is Sam, from London and I'm a deckhand on the Esperanza.

We are here principally for the WSSD conference in Johannesburg. It's easy to get pessimistic about the conference in that, from an environmental perspective, any agreements resulting from this forum will never be adequate. Futhermore passing resolutions is one thing enforcement is another, as was proved after the conference in Rio. All in all its quite demoralising.

However the international framework exists and that is what has to be built on. Greenpeace has an important role in that it can collect and
desseminate independent information and highlight transgressions. Greenpeace is one of the few global organisations that can do this and this is ultimatley the reason why i'm here.
