Sink or swim?

For many years the islands of the Pacific have been renowned for their beauty -now they're making headlines because they may be inundated by the ocean, thanks to the effects of climate change.

The Pacific islands are suffering from the policies of more developed polluting nations and Australia is one of the worst offenders. It could still apply the brakes by ratifying the Kyoto Protocol at this year's Earth Summit but judging from recent performances (like bailing out the Stuart Shale oil project and reducing greenhouse funding) that seems unlikely.

Greenpeace sent a clear message to Australian delegates at the South Pacific Regional Environment Program's conference on Climate Change in Nadi, Fiji.

Activists clung to a capsized lifeboat in the conference centre's swimming pool, demanding Australia "Ratify Kyoto Now". A solar powered LED sign flashed "Stop Fuelling Chaos" while Australian delegates cooled down with a solar powered fan.
