Flying in face of the Filthy Three

The United States, Australia and Canada have been dubbed the Filthy Three by our delegates to the Earth Summit. They skirt their duties to regulate industry and slide away from being held accountable by the people who elect them. Sometimes it seems that they think no one is watching as they determinedly demolish real attempts at creating a greener, sustainable future.

Three human climbers showed them they were wrong today, by climbing the central flagpole of the capital of Australia, and unfurling a defiant banner calling on the Howard Government to impose the minimum standards necessary on the fossil fuel industry. In a peaceful protest, 3 Greenpeace climbers scaled the 80-metre Parliament House flagpole to unfurl their message on a giant banner: "Ratify Kyoto Now".

The Kyoto Protocols were ratified by the majority of the world's governments but met with serious opposition from the Filthy Three. Australia has long been considered the lapdog of the United States, unable and unwilling to commit to guidelines such as the Kyoto Protocol, which aims to reduce the effect that climate change is having world wide.

Climate campaigner and expert climber Catherine Fitzpatrick explains, "Greenpeace has taken this action today because the Howard Government is failing to address the root causes of climate change.

"The evidence that burning fossil fuels is already disrupting our climate is mounting every day and John Howard is asleep below us. Greenpeace is here today to wake him up to his responsibilities to the people of Australia and the world."

And if the Howard government doesn't heed the call, it will go down in history as the government that failed to act at the critical moment.
