Matt Gianni is trying to make a last ditch effort to get a strong biodiversity protection target in the agreement, didn't come through very disappointing given that a good chance that half of the species on the planet will be extinct in be the end of century. Meantime, he's had some really good meetings with the people from the traditional small scale fishers organizations (they call themselves fisher people), from India, Phillipines, 'and other places like that.'
Managed to have a good chat with vice president of the world bank for external affairs, and hopefully convinced him to take a hard look at the support the world bank is providing to the shrimp farming industry, which has had devastating consequences for tens of thousand s of peoples in developing countries an the environment. Why? The shrimp industry is the antithesis of everything this conference is supposed to stand for. The industry has destroyed hundreds of thousand of hectares of coastal mangrove forests which are some of the most biologically rich ecosystems in the world.
Matt doesn't eat shrimp. "I love shrimp but I'm pissed off I can't eat a plate of shrimp in good conscience."
I asked Matt how he feels right now. "I'm pissed off!" he said. "I'm angry that governments have their heads in the sand - they can't see- they are ignoring what is happening to the planet - I mean think about it - half of the worlds biodiversity will be GONE by the end of the century.
The future that we will be leaving to our own children and their children is a greatly impoverished planet. Climate change is destroying coral reefs - in 50 years time we may be taking our grand children to museums and saying 'Look at these beautiful these reefs - they used to exist all over the planet - now they are gone'"
Be pissed off...forever.
Too much "environment stuff" will suffocate us all!
