Jobs
& Trees - The forest economy in British Columbia
"We don't have to choose between jobs and trees. If our forest industry
was managed properly, we would have plenty of both." - Pulp and
Paper Woodworkers of Canada, 1993
The
Facts:
- Canada
is the largest exporter of forest products in the world, and British
Columbia is responsible for half of that production B.C. gets only
1/5 as many jobs per cubic metre of timber logged as California AND
has one of the worst records of job creation in the world.
- Logging
has increased dramatically over the last 20 years from less than 40
to more than 70 million cubic metres per year (Ministry of Forests),
but in the same period forestry has decreased its contribution to
GDP by one half, from over 10% to around 5% All primary industries
combined (eg. forestry, mining) directly provide only 4.7% to provincial
employment.
- The
BC timber industry enjoys a $2.5 billion per year subsidy 4 groups
of companies control 93% of the trees logged in BC's public forests
"If we allow the timber companies to control the future, they will
ensure that vibrant rural communities become ghost towns and our ancient
forests become an ever-expanding clearcut wasteland". -Tzeporah Berman,
Forests Campaigner, Greenpeace. Greenpeace report - Jobs and Trees:
The Forest Economy in British Columbia.
