JANUARY
2001 BIOSAFETY PROTOCOL NEGOTIATIONS
Montreal, 20 January
2000 -- Government representatives from around the world will
meet for an Extraordinary Conference of Parties to the UN
Convention on Biological Diversity in Montreal from 24 - 28
January to agree on international rules on genetically modified
organisms (GMOs), the Biosafety Protocol.
International
rules in order to control the transportation, handling and
uses of GMOs were meant to be adopted in February 1999 in
Cartagena - Colombia. But negotiations on the Protocol collapsed
when a small group of grain exporting countries, including
both USA and Canada, refused to accept that there should be
any environmental controls on the export of GMO crops.
The way the protocol will be formulated will be crucial to
its effectiveness in helping to prevent genetic pollution.
Greenpeace is urging the Governments to adopt a strong and
binding Biosafety Protocol to prevent the uncontrolled proliferation
of GMOs.
