EUROPE SAYS NO TO GE-SOYBEANS IMPORTED
FROM USA
Hamburg,
13 December 1999 -- Twenty Greenpeace activists have since
this morning been protesting against the new harvest of genetically
engineered (GE) soybeans being imported into Europe from the
USA. Two activists climbed from inflatables onto the side
of the Yoki, a freighter carrying 60,000 tonnes of
GE-soybeans from North America, and stretched a banner between
its anchors. The ships' cargo comes from New Orleans and is
destined for the Oelmuehle Hamburg, an oil mill belonging
to the US company, Archer-Daniel-Midland (ADM).
ADM, which is headquartered in Decatur in Illinois, is the
USA's biggest processor of GE-soybeans. The oil mill processes
several thousand metric tons of soybean per day without separating
GE-soybeans. Although the company has announced it would respect
European consumers' wishes to have non-GE commodities it keeps
slipping in GE-soybeans.
