Life on the planet is rapidly disappearing, our forests are being destroyed and our oceans are being depleted. Local peoples are being robbed of the natural resources they need for their survival.

Only governments have the power to stop this destruction. As early as 1992 at the environmental summit meeting in Rio a process, called the "Convention on Biodiversity" (CBD) was agreed to by the world leaders. This CBD of the United Nations focussed on conserving the diversity of species and promoting sustainable forms of use - it is basically an agreement to protect life on earth. Since then, ministers from all over the world have met regularly to find answers to the destruction.

However, the responsible heads of government have barely glanced at the subject of ancient forests or oceans so far. In February 2004, the ministers will meet again - this time in Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia. The 2004 CBD Conference will be about marine sanctuaries and protection zones for ancient forests, because the sea, as a habitat, is subject to the same destructive mechanisms, the same uncaring policies, and the same ruthless profiteering, as the habitat of the ancient forest.

It is high time, in other words, that the politicians at the CBD were reminded what their job is, reminded of their promises and their responsibilities as "keepers of the treasure", which is why Kids for Forests is starting up a protest kids everywhere can take part in.
