                    GREENPEACE PRESS RELEASE
                    ************************

>> POSITION IS NOW 440 MILES NORTH OF THE CAPE VERDE ISLANDS

Media/Position update from the Greenpeace ship Solo now tracking
the vessel Pacific Pintail which is carrying radioactive
plutonium waste from a reprocessing plant in France back to
Japan.

 March 2, 1995--Day Eight 0700 GMT
The Greenpeace ship Solo's position at 0700 GMT on 2 March,
1995 was 24 degrees and 25 minutes North and 26 degrees and 37
minutes West. Our current speed is 14 knots and we are heading
southwest on a compass course of 211 degrees. We are currently
some 440 miles North of the Cape Verde Islands today passing the
Canary Islands yesterday. The wind is easterly, force 6. We are
travelling with a crew of 18 and our mission is to track and
report on the Pacific Pintail's route to countries along the way.

Greenpeace is still unable to detect which route the Pacific
Pintail will take as the ship has changed course a number of
times since starting its voyage. We should be able to determine
the route within the next 48 hours depending on its course.
Cogema, PNTL and the Japanese government remain secretive about
the ships route despite opposition from more than 25 countries
around the world who have demanded that and other safety and
logistical information. Most recently, South Africa, the Fiji
Islands, Chile, and Argentina (according to newspaper reports)
have voiced opposition to the shipment.

Updates from the Solo are sent out on a daily basis at
approximately 0700 GMT and 1900 GMT. If additional information on
the Pacific Pintail's voyage or the HLW shipment is required,
please contact Bas Bruyne on the Solo (phone: ++871-1301166--
Warning. Calls to the ship are approximately $10 per minute), or
Damon Moglen at GP France (phone: ++33-1-4770-1605).
