South of Chilean Territorial Waters, 20 March, 1995 (GP) A
Chilean warship, the Micalva, has forced the nuclear waste ship
Pacific Pintail out of its territorial waters after two hours of
repeated radio warnings and claims that it would take action to
enforce its ban on the shipment. The warship was joined by a
Chilean military airplane which few over the Pintail and the
Greenpeace vessel Solo now tracking the ship.
"The captain of the Pintail and the French, British and Japanese
authorities involved have been forced to heed the Chilean
government's recent decision not to allow the ship in its
waters," said Greenpeace's Bas Bruyne on board the Solo.
"Greenpeace applauds South America's strong opposition to this
dangerous shipment of nuclear waste and calls for an immediate
end to the global trade in plutonium."
