>> SPANISH RESUME FISHING ON THE NOSE OF THE GRAND BANKS

ST. JOHN'S, Newfoundland March 28 1995 (GP) The Greenpeace vessel
Cape Mugford reports today that Spanish boats have resumed
fishing on the Grand Banks. The Cape Mugford reports that at
least four Spanish trawlers are currently spread out along a
narrow extension of the nose of the Banks known as the Sackville
Spur.

The Spanish resumed fishing at 9 p.m. Monday night, and the
Mugford confirmed the vessels had their nets in the water again
today. So far, Greenpeace has received no reports of Canadian
action against the EU boats.

Greenpeace Spain's fisheries campaigner Riki Aguilar, on board
the Cape Mugford, continues to communicate with the Spanish
captains, pressing the environmental organization's demand for an
immediate moratorium.

A combination of weather conditions and mechanical problems have
prevented the Greenpeace crew from launching a zodiac inflatable
boat.

The Cape Mugford reports that the situation remains tense, and it
appears the entire Spanish fleet, with one exception, has nets in
the water. The Cape Mugford will provide regular updates to
Greenpeace in St. John's, Toronto and Madrid.

Greenpeace is scheduled to address the UN conference later today.
An outline of the environmental organization's proposed revisions
to the UN draft treaty text is available, as is a list of
specific demands for the treaty outcome.
