               GREENPEACE PRESS RELEASE
               ************************

Bratislava, 20.2.1996, (GP) Environmental organisations
Greenpeace and Za Matku Zem (For Mother Earth) today made two
protests actions against the transport of 235 partially spent
nuclear fuel elements from Lubim/Greifswald in Germany to Paks
in Hungary.

First one took place in the railstation of Nove Zamky at 4:15
PM where activists wearing overalls and gas-masks placed a
banner with text "East Europe - dump-site of West" in the
moment of passing the transport through this station.

Second one took place in Bratislava. Delegation of both
organisations there officially delivered a sharp protest to
German and Hungarian embassies.

The NPP Greifswald contains reactor type (VVER-440/213) that
is too unsafe to get German licensing (it was shut down in
1991 after reunification). The Paks reactors are the same type
like in Greifswald. The same type of reactors is also in NPP
under construction in Mochovce, Slovakia.

"We could not accept this policy of two safety standards,
higher for Western and lower for Central and Eastern Europe,"
said Lubica Trubiniova, Greenpeace nuclear campaigner in
Slovakia. "When this type of reactor didn't receive the
licence in Germany, then how could be operated Paks. Due this
reasons is also unacceptable to build up new units of
VVER440/213 in Mochovce."

"Everybody should be responsible for self-produced waste,
produced due commercial profit and therefore should the waste
stay in country where was produced. This transport is showing
amorality of western nuclear lobby which is moving problem of
nuclear waste to Central and Eastern Europe."
