                   GREENPEACE PRESS RELEASE
                   ************************

THE SIGNATURES OF MOCHOVCE DO NOT SOLVE PROBLEMS OF SLOVAKIA

Bratislava, 16. april 1996 -- Today in Bratislava, activists
of environmental NGOs GREENPEACE, FOR MOTHER EARTH, SZOPK Nove
Zamky, LEVICE ENVIRONMENTAL GROUP and other protested against
the signing of the agreements on the completion of the two
first units of the NPP Mochovce. They reminded also that this
weighty event with serious negative impacts for the safety,
economy and environment of Slovakia is being realised only ten
days before the tragic anniversary of the nuclear disaster in
the NPP Chernobyl, which will have ten years on 26 April.

In front of the door of the hotel Forum where the signing was
taking place, the activists protested with the banners saying
Hands out of Mochovce, With nuclear waste forever!, For much
money - a lot of scrap, Chernobyl experts going on Mochovce,
Stop atom mafia etc. They expressed their protest against not
informing the public and ignoring serious expert arguments
which confirm the economic, energy and ecological
disadvantages of the NPP Mochovce. The environmental NGOs have
presented many times on various levels studies and analysis
which call attention to the unused potential of energy savings
and non-nuclear energy sources in Slovakia which is higher
than the output of two given blocks of Mochovce.

"The NPP Mochovce would not keep the current Western standards
of the nuclear safety and after its potential completion,
Slovakia and Central Europe will be endangered by two nuclear
sources," said Lubica Trubiniova, the head of the Greenpeace
campaign office in Slovakia. "The signing of today's
agreements clearly proves that Siemens cares only about its
own profit but not nuclear safety. Otherwise Siemens would not
take part in the project of the Mochovce completion, big
reconstruction of the NPP Bohunice and the reconstruction of
the gas-steam cogenerated heating plant in Bratislava at the
same time," said Lubica Trubiniova.

"With the project of the Mochovce completion, Siemens,
Framatome, EdF and Skoda only save their economic situation
and profit. But our citizens will bear its negative impacts,"
said Juraj Krivosik, head of the NGO For Mother Earth.
"Immense investment for Mochovce will not be used for the
energy savings and other economically effective energy
sources. Only a part of this investment would be sufficient
for the same electricity output as Mochovce would give. With
today's act, the real problems of Slovakia only start."
