GREENPEACE PRAISES KRAFT-JACOBS GENETIC ISSUE DRIVE

Greenpeace praises KFs genetic issue drive

March 27, 1997, - After it was found that Toblerone chocolate could contain
lecithin from genetically altered soybeans, retail chain KF decided
not to sell the product until the manufacturer is able to guarantee
that it is free of genetically manipulated raw products.

" Toblerone is the first example of what is going to happen to the
products which are not guaranteed to be free of genetically
manipulated soya, says Mats Holmberg, spokesman for Greenpeace.
Nobody wants them. Neither consumers, retailers, distributors nor
producers want them. Soon Agriculture Minister Annika Åhnberg is the
only one who thinks genetically manipulated is a good idea".

KFs decision not to sell the genetically manipulated Toblerone
follows the combine's decision earlier this week not to sell any
products which may contain raw products from the genetically
manipulated soybean Roundup Ready (RRS) or other products which
have been manipulated to become resistant to weedkillers.

" A good decision. KF, just as ICA and Hemköp, has even earlier had a
strong attitude towards genetically manipulated foods - but only in
words, says Mats Holmberg. Now KF shows that they are serious. If ICA
and Hemköp fail to follow they will lose the consumers' trust".

KFs decision puts more pressure on the dairies and farmers not to allow
genetically manipulated soybeans in fodder. The Austrian dairy
company Berglandmilch, with a turnover of approx. 5 billion SEK and
half the Austrian dairy market, Wednesday decided to free itself of
all genetically manipulated raw produce and products.

"In a short time we have seen how companies like Karlshamn AB,
Kooperativa Förbundet, Procordia Food, Kungsörnen and Berglandmilch
deprecate genetically manipulated foods, says Holmberg. Now everyone
knows that it is possible. It is time for Arla (Swedens largets
dairy producer) and other dairies to manifest their intentions.
