Statement of the Fiji Prime Minister

5 July, 2002

Fiji Prime Minister, Mr Qarase on radio FM96 broadcast - speaking about the shipments.

"Pacific Island countries through the Pacific Island Forum have always taken a united stand in that issue. The forum countries, specifically the island countries, oppose the passage of ships that carry nuclear fuel or nuclear waste through the Pacific. And our concerns have been expressed to the countries that are doing it.

They have tried to give the assurance, the countries, that an accident is fairly remote, on our part we won't, in fact there is always a possibility of an accident, after all these things are made by men, and there is always that possibility, even if maybe remote possibility, but it is still the possibility.

We are going to a meeting of the Pacific Island Forum next month here in Fiji, and I'm sure we are going to voice our concerns once more."
