Statement of Congresswoman Donna M. Christian-Green on the Impending Nuclear Waste Shipment
Tuesday January 13, 1998
Once again, I join my colleagues, Greenpeace International, the Nuclear Control Institute, and leaders and citizens around the globe in opposition to an impending shipment of plutonium waste.
As the lone congressional representative from the Caribbean, often called "The conscience of the Congress in matters of the Caribbean", I would be remiss in my duty to the people of the Virgin Islands and the entire region if I were silent on this matter of extreme urgency and importance to the well being, safety and life to those of us who live here.
As Greenpeace has said, this shipment, and any shipment of this kind, poses "serious environmental, safety and security risks to Caribbean nations."
But it is not enough to protest this shipment here in the Caribbean, it is a threat wherever it passes. Therefore my position remains the same as it was in 1996 when I wrote to President Clinton to urge the adoption of alternative methods for transporting or treating the deadly plutonium waste.
I pledge my continued advocacy and support to the end of a safe and more satisfactory solution to this issue.
No one, anywhere, should have to bear the risk of a nuclear catastrophe.
