Namibia

  • Pirate port - Walvis Bay in Namibia is the second largest pirate port for toothfish. CCAMLR estimates that in 1998/9, 4502 tonnes of green landings of toothfish were landed here. About 2%, or 920 tonnes of Japanese and US imports of toothfish in 1998 came from Namibia.
  • Flag of convenience country -- Namibia is a country that sells its flag to foreign companies seeking to escape fisheries regulation. There are believed to be pirate toothfish vessels using the Namibian flag.
