GLOBALLY, GREENPEACE HAS been campaigning for years to bring an end to overfishing and the destruction of the marine environment. The ocean surrounding Antarctica is perhaps the last true marine wilderness on the planet.

As fishing grounds throughout the rest of the world become depleted and stocks collapse, more and more fishing companies are starting to operate illegally in ever more remote regions of the planet.

The disastrous situation in the Southern Ocean is symptomatic of the global problem of illegal fishing by the large-scale industrial fish factories and the lack of political will from governments to stop it.
