* CCAMLR country

Japan

  • CCAMLR country
  • Market country - Japan is the largest market for toothfish (called mero here) and imports over 50% of the world catch. In the first half of 1999 it imported 77% of the estimated catch. During this time most of its imports came from Chile, China, France and Australia. Japan also imported 714 tonnes from Mauritius - the number one pirate port. Toothfish is worth at least US$1000 each and demand is high. CCAMLR countries make up more than 90% of the toothfish market. Charged with conserving the toothfish, these countries are instead driving the pirates' "gold rush" fishing by providing them markets.
