USA
- CCAMLR country
- Market country - The USA is the second largest market for toothfish
(called Chilean sea bass) after Japan. It imported 20% of the estimated
world catch in 1998. Most of its imports were from Argentina (3984 tonnes)
and Chile (1936 tonnes). The US also imported 537 tonnes from Mauritius
(the No. 1 toothfish pirate port) and 451 tonnes from Namibia, the No.2
pirate port. Chilean sea bass prices are steadily increasing - in January
1998 it was worth $6/kg, in July 1999 it was worth $11/kg. Demand remains
high. In 1999, two US retailers, Whole Foods and Wild Oats stopped selling
Chilean sea bass because of pirate fishing. CCAMLR countries make up
more than 90% of the toothfish market. Charged with conserving the toothfish,
these countries are instead driving the pirates' "gold rush" fishing
by providing them markets.
